Digital mobile radio network for security at the Servola ironworks

Customer: Telecom Italia (enterprise customer division) on behalf of Gruppo Lucchini

Year: 2008

The project was the result of an enterprise contract drawn up between Telecom Italia and Gruppo Lucchini, who had made the first move. Gruppo Lucchini owns the ironworks at Servola (TS), a company that now employs 500 people and whose premises cover an area of 560,000 sq m. There was a need to implement a new generation mobile radio network able to support the functions of the ironworks' new in-house emergency plan. Telecom Italia requested the assistance of calzavara, who devised a turnkey solution within four months inclusive of:

  • design
  • construction
  • installation and testing
  • maintenance and management

Calzavara set up a new generation digital radio network based on the DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) standard which guarantees more efficient use of the radio spectrum, integrated data communication and advanced voice communication. In addition, we introduced a mobile radio terminal localization system with digital mapping support, increased the radio coverage and improved audio quality in difficult environments (coking works, blast furnaces, etc.). Antenna-supporting structures for the mobile radio network in the urban area of Rome

Customer: S.I.P. (attuale Telecom Italia)

Year: 1990

Italia '90, at the time of the World Cup Football Championship, was an important year in the field of public infrastructures and services. In the field of telecommunications, setting up the new 900 MHz mobile radio system was no mean feat for the then SIP and its trusted suppliers.
Calzavara also had a hand in the::

  • design
  • construction
  • installation and testing
  • maintenance and management

These new antenna-supporting structures were designed taking into account the problem of their environmental impact in the urban area of Rome, combining the figure of a traditional metal tower with an antenna support pole.

Mobile radio network supporting Civil Defence in the municipality of Trento

Customer: Provincia Autonoma di Trento

Year: 2007

Calzavara and Motorola spa created a mobile radio network of great importance to the Municipality of Trento. It grants Civil Defence bodies (fire brigade, health emergency, alpine rescue, etc.) access to a communication technology even in the absence of other networks (e.g. when out of range of the cellular network).

Calzavara offered services in:

  • design
  • construction
  • installation and testing
  • maintenance and management

The project required 52 repeaters (4 made from scratch) to be installed on municipal pylons, ensuring comprehensive coverage with the new frequencies. The new mobile radio network, using digital Tetra technology (with transmission frequencies between 430 and 460 Megahertz), allows all Civil Defence bodies to communicate via a single transceiver and connect with other radio networks, even cellular telephone ones.

Antenna-supporting tower in Piazza Matteotti, Treviso

Customer: Comune di Treviso

Year: 2005

The installation of an antenna in Piazza Matteotti, Treviso, was part of an urban project reappraising the museum area of S. Caterina.
Calzavara helped in collaboration with a prestigious architecture studio, offering:

  • structural design
  • construction
  • installation and testing

An infrastructure was designed and created that comprised a steel and glass tower enhanced with painted hand-made Murano glass panels; the tower, about 30 metres tall, proved to be a highly successful architectural feat combining functionality with aesthetic worth, adding a certain grace to its surroundings.

The top, where the antennas are fitted, is made of Vitroplex plastic, a radio-electrically transparent material that resembles frosted glass.
